WHY CAN’T I GET TO HEAVEN THROUGH GOOD WORKS?

Many believe that if they try hard in this life to do good, that God will accept them into heaven when they die. Yet the Bible makes it clear that getting into heaven is not something we can accomplish in our own power.

EPHESIANS 2:8-9 clearly teach, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Being saved from sin and receiving eternal life cannot take place by our works. Getting into heaven requires faith in Jesus Christ.

Why is getting into heaven based on faith? Heaven is a perfect place that is free from sin. Yet every person except Jesus has sinned.

ROMANS 3:23 teaches, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” ECCLESIASTES 7:20 adds, “Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.” No matter how hard you may try, even one sin is enough to keep you from heaven unless you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ.
The good news of the Bible is that, “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (ROMANS 5:8).

He knew we would each fail, sin, and lack the ability to enter heaven apart from Him. He died in our place, offering Himself as the way, the truth, and the life (JOHN 14:6) that would allow us access to heaven by faith in Him.
Can anyone come to faith in Jesus Christ and receive eternal life? Yes! In JOHN 3:16, Jesus promised, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” This “whoever” includes you.
How can a person place his or her faith in Jesus Christ and receive eternal life in heaven? ROMANS 10:9 answers, “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Salvation occurs when we accept Jesus as Lord and believe He rose again from the dead.
When we do, we can be confident that He will accept US. ROMANS 8:1 teaches, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” 1 JOHN 5:13 adds that we can know for certain that we are saved and will spend eternity with the Lord when we die: “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.”
We are saved by grace through faith and not by works. No amount of good works could ever get us there. Only a good God Who sent His perfect Son could get us to heaven and that’s by repentance and faith. There is no way that a good person will ever make it to heaven on his or her own but only bad people forgiven by a very good God. There is positively no other way to get there. Sadly, hell will be full of self-proclaimed “good people”
Have you been trusting in your own efforts and goodness to receive eternal life? Today, you can place your faith in Jesus and know for certain you will have eternal life. There is no special prayer you must pray to do so. Remember, salvation is not based on your works, but on God’s grace. However, the following prayer is one you can use to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior:
“Dear God, I realize I am a sinner and could never reach heaven by my own good deeds. Only you have the power to save me. Right now I place my faith in Jesus Christ as God’s Son who died for my sins and rose from the dead to give me eternal life. Please forgive me of my sins and help me to live for you. Thank you for accepting me and giving me eternal life.”AMEN.

God bless you.

THE UGLY SIDE OF PRE-MARITAL SEX

Pre-marital sex is a very important topic especially today. Young people are bombarded with world’s (satan’s) standards of morality or immorality. The values and moral standards which were endorsed by most people in the past years are now ridiculed by many. Teachings on sexual purity before and after marriage are no longer held before young people as a law of God nor even an ideal goal to strive for. So called sexual freedom is flaunted as the norm among teenagers and adults.
See God’s law is plain:

“Flee sexual immorality”. Every sin that a man does is outside the body;but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his body “. ( 1 Corinthians 6:18)

God,our creator, knows our needs and what is best for us, his creation. Behind each negative Bible command are two positive principles. One is to protect us, the other is to provide for us. God has” good things” planned for us and does not want us to do something that will bring pain to us and to others. God’s motivation in dealing with us is love.

“God is love”. (1 John 4:16).He is the author of love and he knows all about it. God is not anti-sex. He created sex and said it was good, but he gave rules with it. Can you imagine a football game without rules, where everyone does just what they want to do? We have one basic rule from God with reference to sexual activity. That is “Wait until marriage”.
We saw in “1 Corinthians 6:18” that sex before marriage is a sin against the body. Sinning against the body means losing respect for your body, as well as the body of the one you’re involved with. Once respect is lost, it becomes easier to indulge in promiscuous sex. The emotional needs which God created are not met in casual sex but in the loving commitment of a partner (marriage). Waiting as God commands gives peace of mind which affects our physical health. We don’t experience the stress of worrying about unwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) that could kill or cripple us or our children.

Birth control methods are sometimes unreliable. Some condoms and of course the pill offers no protection whatsoever against STDs.
Fifty years ago, teens were warned against STDs(syphilis and gonorrhea). There are now over 50 STDs and AIDS is not the only one that kills. Some cause birth defects that pass a parent’s foolish decision on to an innocent child. And do you know that cervical cancer, a disease that is proven to be more prevalent among sexually active girls? All these are some of the physical effects of premarital sex.
Spiritual Effects
God blesses purity : “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”.(Matthew 5:8).Clearly God’s word forbids any type of sex outside of marriage. There are spiritual consequences anytime we disobey God.

” God will judge for fornicators and adulterers “.(Hebrews 13:4)

Sexual sins brought destruction to Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19. Many Bible characters committed sexual sins and were judged by God. Sin separates us from God. (Hosea 5:6).It causes us to be a bad influence on others, both Christians and non christians. Sexual purity is a way to show respect for others and to confirm their dignity as human beings. It is impossible to show someone the love of God while engaging in immorality with that person. When we maintain sexual purity, we can be channels of God’s love and can accurately represent him to others.

God bless you as you are faithful to His word. Amen.

FINISHING THE RACE

However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me.  Acts 20:24a

Lots of people start a project but few people finish well.  Living our life for Christ, and seeing our God-given mission through to its completion reminds me a lot of a marathon race.  Thousands may start a marathon, comparatively few finish the race.

The start of the marathon looks impressive.  You can see row after row of runners 6 to 10 abreast as each is trying to find their proper pace.  At this point, none of those runners imagine themselves not performing well.  Each desires to finish, some dream of winning. None imagine themselves quitting early, but it doesn’t take long before the large group of runners begins to spread out into smaller packs, and as time goes by,fatigue sets in, the head starts throbbing, and muscles start cramping.  It doesn’t take too long before some of the runners are dropping out of the race.

The Christian life is a lot like a marathon, it’s a long race and not a sprint.  Just like marathon runners, many Christians start out well, but considerably fewer finish well.  When we become born-again, we all start out with the same equipment.  We are convicted of our sin and we believe in God’s grace by the same Holy Spirit.  We are forgiven by the same sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, we are empowered by the same Holy Spirit, and the same resurrection.

So, what makes the difference?  We all started with the same equipment, so what was it that makes some able to see their race through to the end, while others fall by the wayside?

I believe that there are only two questions that will determine whether we finish well.

How well did you train?

How well did you persevere?

If you learn to train yourself well, and if you learn to persevere well, then you will certainly finish well.
✔Training Well
Training well means that you work diligently to develop certain habits in your life:

  •  Read God’s word regularly. Seek to apply and obey God’s word and precepts in your daily life and decisions (Matthew 7:24-27; James 1:22-23).
  • Pray daily (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
  • Attend church and worship services and cell meetings faithfully (Hebrews 10:25)
  • Seek to discover how God has gifted you and use those gifts to support the body of Christ.
  • Become Faithful in Tithing and Giving
  • Humble thyself with fasting and Prayer
  • Diligently apply God’s word and precepts to help you overcome your personal weaknesses and difficulties (e.g. Forgiveness)
  • Develop a habit of sharing your personal testimony and inviting people to come into Christ.(Evangelism)

✔Persevering Well

The idea of perseverance denotes the act of steadfastness, patiently persisting and to firmly adhere as we grow in our Christian faith.  Perseverance is one of those qualities we will need as we train for Christian excellence. Of all the Christian habits, perseverance is probably the most difficult to develop. When running a marathon, a runner will often come to the point of “hitting the wall.”  That’s the point in the race when the runner is exhausted, every muscle seems to be sending pain signals through the brain, and his every logical instinct is to quit.

There are times in the Christian life where we feel like we’re hitting the wall too, it just looks a little bit different.  In the Christian life hitting the wall can look like this:

❗I’ve prayed and talk to God about my temper for years and nothing seems to change.

❗ I’ve prayed for years for God to change my spouse, I’m in an unhappy marriage.  I need to get out.

❗I’ve prayed to God to help expand my business but everything seems to be in a standstill.

❗Why isn’t God helping me to improve my grades. I’ve done all I could..

In the Christian life, getting weary or fears of failure can discourage us or distract us from what God wants us to achieve.

But, how we behave when we are tempted to quit will make all the difference between winning and losing.

The simple message is this: what ever your struggle is today, what ever you are trying to overcome, please don’t quit. If you’ve tried and failed before, then get up and start again. God wants to give you a fresh start. Commit your struggle to God. Ask Him to carry you for awhile, but don’t you quit. Don’t give up! Keep on training yourself for godliness, and keep on learning to persevere.

So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.  Galatians 6:9.

HOW TO DEVELOP A POSITIVE MINDSET

Mindset is simply the thoughts and perception an individual has about a situation. It can also be said to be the emotional response to daily activities. Having a positive mindset can do a lot of good in situations when you cannot do much to change some major constraints. Negative mindset on the other hand keeps you from reaching good decisions and eventually get frustrated by the storms of life.
We can develop a positive mindset in many ways. I am going to talk about some important ways on how to develop a positive mindset.
1. STAY OPTIMISTIC
Being optimistic is simply having confidence and being hopeful of the future. Expecting the best possible outcome from every situation. Being optimistic always makes an you have hope for what seems to be impossible and hasn’t yet happened. Hence you always hope for just good things to come your way neglecting all the negative thoughts and ideas around you. With this, what everyone thinks and says doesn’t necessarily count because you become positive minded.

2. CHOOSE POSITIVE MINDED FRIENDS
Negative friends don’t help in having a positive mindset. All they do is demean your value, destroy your image, and disbelieve your opinions and capabilities. In short, friends with negative mindset are a bad influence to purpose driven individuals and positive minded people. Stay away from negative people and surround yourself with positive people.

3. PRACTICE POSITIVE IMAGERY
Practicing positive imagery can be likened to faith as described in the bible as “the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen”. Positive imagery is simply imagining yourself being successful in what you do. Think about the possible results and the level you can get to after being successful and see yourself in that position. Expect positive results, and work towards achieving them.

4. DO WHAT YOU DO BEST
Doing what you do best is important because it gives you a sense of purpose and confidence. Get enough knowledge and information about whatever thing you want to achieve. It makes you bold when taking decisions and shapes your mindset in a more positive way.

5. LIVE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
Developing a positive mindset comes with a lot of responsibilities of which one is living a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a more balanced diet, drinking more water, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep. These keep you focused towards a more positive kind of living and thinking.

There are a lot of benefits from living a positive life. Remember, we need to keep a positive mindset in order to reach and achieve higher heights. You can do it. Believe in yourself and take action now!

MY LETTER TO CHRISTIANS – We are failing the world

One way or the other, everyone is affiliated to one thing because of an unprecedented event which happens to be the family or part of the world in which we are born.

One aspect of our lives that influences our character and various decisions we take in life is our religious affiliation. All religious bodies are societies of their own. They have their own culture, beliefs and norms which they live by. But the question is, do we live in those societies because we are born into them or do we make personal decisions due to our knowledge and ideologies of that society in this case; religious bodies.

I am a Christian because personally I have encountered what the Bible calls the truth, which is Jesus Christ. Other people who may be affiliated to another religions may have their own beliefs and truth but do these people who are born into these religions have an encounter with their belief or they just have to accept it because that is where they find themselves.

There is always a debate with other religions about which is appropriate or right. Definitely everyone would argue to favor where they find themselves because of their affiliation to it. My argument is that, we as Christians are failing the rest of the world who are unbelievers. This argument is based on my knowledge of and personal belief in Jesus Christ; the way, the truth, and the life.

Christians believe that Jesus is the only way, the truth, and the life. We believe that the only way a person can be saved is by accepting that Jesus Christ is the son of God.[Romans 10:9]

We believe that our mission on earth is to win souls into the kingdom of God. [Matthew 28:19-20]. But what do we find ourselves doing? It is rather unfortunate that, instead of getting close to unbelievers in order to win them to Christ through love, we draw them away with our lifestyles and even through speech.

“For God so loved the world,”-John 3:16. Yes God loved the world because the world had his creation in it. It had all of us who were sinners. [Romans 8:22] But he sacrificed his son, to get us close to him. That is the extent to which God went to save us. By showing undeserving love to us. Why then do we fail to show love towards one another, whether believers or unbelievers. Life is not all about living for ourselves but being our brothers keepers as well. We live our lives daily forgetting about those who have not heard the Good News, and ignoring the fact that we need to get them to Christ.

It is time we stop being selfish. It is time we think about the rest of the world. It is time to win souls for Christ. Gird up your loins. Show love to everyone, and let your light shine to the world. It is time to extend the love towards unbelievers. Let Love Lead. Win souls for Christ NOW!!!

GROWING IN CHRIST-LIKENESS

In today’s article,we’ll be looking at one of the purposes of the church;”Cultivation: Growing in Christ-Likeness”.The word “cultivation itself is a gardening term that calls forth images of planting, watering, tending the soil, etc. And so it is a very appropriate word to use when we talk about growing in our faith as a Christian.
After you accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour, you put your trust and faith in Him for salvation. But God doesn’t want you to just put your trust in Christ. He wants you to grow in your faith. Christianity is not a one-time decision that we take .It is a living, personal relationship with God through his Son, Jesus.

When you come to Christ, you become a new creation. Spiritually, you’re a new born baby and like all babies, you need to grow.

2 Peter 3:18 says,”BUT GROW IN THE GRACE AND IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST…”

We are saved by God’s grace and we need to grow in that grace.Growing in grace means growing in your understanding that you’re accepted by God not on the basis of your performance as a Christian but on the basis of Christ alone. Some people might think that would cause you to sin more, but ironically, “THE MORE WE GRASP THE GRACE OF GOD,THE LESS WE WILL SIN”.
We also need to grow in the knowledge of Christ. This we’ll achieve through learning about Christ in the Bible. But we must also grow in our personal knowledge of Jesus,as we walk with him daily,as we spend time in prayer and submit to His Lordship and authority through the choices we make.
Every Christian needs to grow in his spiritual life.Trust me,if you had a baby who wasn’t growing, you would be checking with every doctor to find out what was wrong. If you’re not growing as a Christian, then that means something is wrong.

But you can’t grow as a Christian until you first become a Christian. “There should be spiritual life before there can be spiritual growth”.

When we talk about spiritual growth and maturity, we are not just talking about your bible knowledge or the years you’ve spent in serving Christ but about “character”.

True spiritual growth and maturity will always result in the Christian becoming more like Jesus in character. That is why I defined cultivation as ” Growing in Christ-Likeness”.

If you’re a Christian, God’s ultimate plan for you is that you will be “conformed to the likeness of His Son” (Romans 8:28-30)

God is far more interested in the development of your character than he is in what you do or how much you have. Spiritual growth is all about becoming like Jesus. You could know the Bible backwards and forwards, but if you’re not becoming more like Christ in your character, then what’s the point?

God develops the character of Christ in you through the Holy Spirit. The Bible calls this “the fruit of the Spirit”.Love, peace, joy, forgiveness, kindness, etc. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Those character traits were expressed perfectly by Jesus. The ultimate measure of spiritual maturity is not about how much you know but how much do you exhibit those character traits.

You can attain spiritual growth and maturity by;

  • Studying the Bible:Read and study God’s word. The Word brings you closer to God and allows Him to shape and renew your life.
  • Prayer:If the Bible is the fuel for Christian living, then prayer is the oxygen that feeds it.God speaks to us through His word and we speak to Him through prayer. Therefore develop a pattern of daily prayer.
  • Fellowship: Commit to a church. Attend regularly.Get involved in a bible study group.Get together with Christian friends but don’t neglect the non-believers.
  • Service: Look for ways to get involved. Volunteer at church.Don’t just be a spectator.Use your spiritual gifts and talents to serve others.

Are you a Christian? Have you really turned from your sins and put your faith in Christ? If you have, then God expects you to grow in your Christian life.
